Challenge
The requirement
An airport terminal is a large-volume, high-occupancy structure with few natural barriers to fire and smoke. Tata Projects needed separate openings closed to create 'Fire Cavity' compartments - from 3.6 m × 3.25 m up to 24 m × 5.65 m - with shop drawings approved before fabrication, tracked across seven openings in parallel with the automatic curtain package.
Solution
How it was delivered
Window Techs supplied 2-hour fire-rated fixed fire curtains (fabric, hood, casing, framing, brackets and fasteners), engineered individually for each of the seven openings. Shop drawings were taken through Tata Projects' approval process, including a dedicated coordination meeting. Technical data sheets for the automatic scope were revised against client comments so both packages stayed aligned.
Why compartmentation matters at airports
Airports combine very large open floor plates with continuous high footfall, complex MEP and baggage-handling voids, and limited ability to fully evacuate a live terminal at short notice. Fire curtains work automatically and do not depend on power, water or human intervention once deployed.
By dividing terminal volumes into defined fire compartments, the curtains limit how far fire and smoke can spread, protect means of escape, and keep unaffected parts of the terminal operable.
